Hotel Booking Tips: Get a Better Room for Less
Hotel prices follow demand: events, holidays and weekends push them up, and quiet weeks bring them down. A few habits make a big difference.
Book refundable, then keep watching
Many hotels and booking sites offer free cancellation up to a day or two before arrival. Book a refundable rate early so you have a room, then check again a week or two before the trip. If the price dropped, cancel and rebook.
Compare the total, including fees
Resort fees, parking and taxes can add a lot per night. Compare the final price, not the headline rate, and check whether breakfast or parking is included.
Booking sites vs booking direct
- Booking sites make it easy to compare many hotels at once and sometimes have package or member prices.
- Booking direct can earn hotel loyalty points and sometimes better room choices. If you find the same price, check which one offers free cancellation.
Location saves money too
A cheaper hotel far from everything can cost more once you add rideshares and parking. Map the places you plan to go before choosing a room.
Watch for vacation rentals for groups
For families and groups staying several nights, a vacation rental with a kitchen can beat two hotel rooms. Check cleaning fees and the cancellation policy before you book.
