Car Rental Fees to Avoid: A Checklist Before You Book

A rental advertised at $25 a day can easily turn into $70 a day at the counter. Most of that difference comes from fees you can avoid if you know where they hide.

Before you book

  • Compare airport vs off-airport: airport locations add concession fees and taxes. An off-airport branch a short ride away is often much cheaper for longer rentals.
  • Look at the total price: compare the full price with taxes and fees, not the daily rate.
  • Choose free cancellation when possible: rental prices move a lot. With free cancellation you can rebook if the price drops.
  • Check the young driver rules: drivers under 25 usually pay a daily surcharge.

At the counter

  • Insurance: check what your own auto policy and credit card already cover before you buy the counter coverage.
  • Fuel plans: prepaid fuel only makes sense if you return the car nearly empty. Otherwise fill it up yourself near the return location.
  • Toll devices: daily toll device fees can add up even on days you never use a toll road. Check if you can pay tolls online instead.
  • Upgrades: a "small upgrade fee" is charged every day of the rental. Say no unless you really need the space.

When you return

Take photos of the car, the fuel gauge and the odometer at pickup and drop-off. It takes one minute and settles most damage or fuel disputes before they start.
