Carry-On Only: The Packing Checklist That Saves Bag Fees
Checked bag fees can wipe out the savings on a cheap fare. Packing carry-on only saves money and time at both ends of the trip.
First, check your fare
Some basic economy and low-cost fares only include a small personal item that fits under the seat. Check the airline's size limits before you pack so you are not charged at the gate, where fees are usually highest.
The checklist
- 3 to 4 tops and 2 bottoms that all match each other
- One pair of shoes on your feet, one in the bag at most
- Underwear and socks for 4 to 5 days, and plan one quick wash
- A light layer or jacket, worn on the plane
- Liquids in travel sizes inside one clear quart-size bag
- Chargers, a power bank and any medication in your personal item
Packing tricks
- Roll clothes or use packing cubes to fit more and keep things tidy.
- Wear your bulkiest items on travel days.
- Buy toiletries at your destination for longer trips.
Once you get used to it, you will never want to wait at baggage claim again.
